Steps to Success
Parents should prepare for potty training by taking the following steps:
1 Decide on the language you will use for referring to bodily fluids, functions and anatomy. Be consistent.
2 Select a potty-chair and place it where your child has easy access. Children feel most comfortable using a potty-chair with both of their feet on the floor. Tell your toddler it is his or her own chair. Put the child's name on it. Let the child decorate it with paint or stickers.
3 Allow your child to watch you use the toilet.
4 Encourage your child to tell you when he or she needs to go. Give praise upon success or even for telling you afterward. Learn to recognize your child's behavior when he or she is about to urinate or have a bowel movement. The child may jump and down, pull at his or her pants, grunt or squat down.
5 Explain what the signals mean. ("The _______ wants to come out; it needs your help.")
6 Praise your child for his or her effort. Don't expect immediate results. Don't let mistakes upset you. Stay positive; neither frowning nor punishing your child will work.
7 After repeated success in getting to the potty on time, suggest wearing "big boy/girl" cotton underwear or training pants. Make this a special moment for your child — take him or her shopping to make the purchase. Rather than food or candy rewards, post a calendar in an accessible spot and place stickers or stars on it to record successes.
